BUCKETS OF EVIDENCE

Press release, Monday 29th September 2003

On Thursday, Impact will be unveiling a new weapon that local people can use to improve life alongside Teesside's most threatening industries.

At the group's public launch meeting, guest speaker Denny Larson from the USA will introduce ideas from around the world for tackling air pollution and health issues. A special attraction will be England's first introduction to Denny's 'Bucket Brigade' - a simple system that residents can use to gather air samples for analysis. And on Friday 3rd (note: since postponed to Monday 6th !), Mr Larson will be running training sessions for local people who want to become samplers.

The Impact launch will be at the Mannion Park club on the Trunk Road at Grangetown, starting at 7pm. Everyone's welcome - press included!

Note:

  1. Impact was formed earlier this year by local residents concerned about the impacts of industry on quality of life in the surrounding communities. Supported in these initial stages by Friends of the Earth, it has already opened new doors for local people to raise issues with industry and regulators, and provided internet briefings on controversial issues (www.impact-teesside.org)
  2. Denny Larson has worked with communities throughout the world as an organiser and technical adviser for 'fenceline' communities, helping establish 'Good Neighbour' agreements between industry and local people. The 'Bucket Brigade' is intended to empower people who would otherwise have to depend on the limited air monitoring provided by local authorities and industry itself. For more about Denny Larson see www.refineryreform.org
  3. Over recent years, air monitoring in Redcar and Cleveland has been progressively reduced to a single site at Coatham, a mile or more beyond the Wilton perimeter fence.
