20 YEARS ON FROM BHOPAL

IMPACT joins Global Day of Action against Corporate Crime.

Press release, Wednesday 27th October 2004

On Friday 3rd December, members of Teesside environmental justice group Impact will join others around the world in marking the twentieth anniversary of the disaster at the Union Carbide plant at Bhopal

Probably the longest-standing fight for justice by survivors of an industrial disaster waged against a transnational corporation, the Bhopal struggle epitomizes the worst abuses of globalization and the challenges involved in holding corporations accountable.

Twenty years after the world's worst industrial disaster in Bhopal, India, survivors and their children are still battling against an insensitive government to bring a criminal corporation to address its pending liabilities. Meanwhile Union Carbide - The Company held responsible for the disaster that has killed over 20,000 to date - is now a wholly owned subsidiary of American transnational Dow Chemicals. Dow says it has only inherited Carbides assets, not its liabilities.

The International Campaign for Justice in Bhopal, a coalition of environmental and social justice organisations, including a trade union of gas-affected women from Bhopal has declared the upcoming anniversary of the 1984 disaster as the Global Day of Action against Corporate Crime.

Impact will be supporting this campaign by holding a peaceful demonstration outside one of four Dow Chemical plants on Teesside on December 3rd 2004. If we get enough support it could be extended to the others. WATCH THIS SPACE!
