Some 'independent' sources that can be very helpful - so far as they go!

Industrial Pollution rates

Env Agency "What's in My Backyard"

Very comprehensive search site including reports on what's emitted from local factories. Needs exploring to get the best out of it.

European Pollutant Emission Register (EPER)

Lists the year 2001 emissions to air and water of 50 pollutants for sites in the EU and Norway - with Teesside among the list-toppers

Air Quality

National Air Quality site

The central database and information resource for air quality monitoring in the UK, largely measuring traffic related pollutants.

Individual site information for Teesside's four local monitoring points
Billingham   Middlesbrough    Redcar    Yarm

Current pollution levels are displayed here

National Atmospheric Emissions Inventory

offers a wider range of emission and source data, searchable by pollutant or by postcode, though at present the data is three years old - and many of the pollutants that arise in Teesside are not measured.

Other Regulators

The Health & Safety Executive (HSE)

concerns itself with risks arising to workers and others on site. The web site includes indexes of enforcement notices and prosecutions

Local Authorities

license those 'lesser' industrial processes that are outside the scope of the Environment Agency. In Redcar and Cleveland, for instance, the council gave the ok to plans for an animal incinerator at Charltons.
